Tips for college newbies

I recently spent a week being a mentor for first year’s students that are starting college in DIT. Being around these first years and seeing how anxious they were about college has inspired me to write a post on tips for getting through your first year of college. College is not as scary as you may think! I remember my first day of college, I was so scared! All I kept thinking was omg I'm going to have no friends, I'm going to be eating my lunch in the toilet or the course I've chosen might not be right for me. Thank God it wasn't like that!  I ended up loving my course, making new friends and passing my first year of college!

So here are few tips from me on how to get through your first year of college while also having some fun.

Join societies-
Okay when I say join societies, I don't mean join about 20 societies and then not be able to go to half of them like I did. I actually ended up only showing up to one or two of the societies that I joined, so I would recommend signing up to about three to five societies, but you can join as many as you want.

Societies are great ways for making new friends! I made lifelong friends through the societies that I joined!
Joining societies actually takes away the stress from college work so please don't go through your college years without being part of a society!

There are so many different societies for you to join no matter what college you’re going into! Examples - Fashion society, debating team, African society, banter society, ANYTHING!
I am not sure about the other colleges, but I know that in DIT it is €2-€5 to join societies.

Talk, talk, talk!
Trust me everyone is on the same boat as you on the first day of college so talk to someone, don't just sit there on your own! Most people in your course will be feeling nervous, so there you go something to talk about!

I remember my first day in college and I was thinking oh sure if I don't talk to anyone in my course, I can always meet up with a friend for lunch. No honey, it doesn't work like that. What are you going to do if you have lunch and your friends are in a lecture? So do make friends with people in your course! It's always healthy to make new friends.

But don’t worry too much about making friends! As the year goes on, you’ll end up making lots of new friends through the college events, group work and societies.

Attend your lectures
I wasn't going to add this in, so you would think I was cool. If you want to pass your first year of college, then do go to your lectures! At the end of the day, you're still in college to learn.

By attending your lectures and making yourself known will benefit you, trust me! And if you are attending lectures, pay attention!
I'm not sure about other colleges, but DIT lecturer will usually know all their students as the lecture room is not that big, and they don't put many students in a lecture.

Get out of your comfort zone
I personally believe that if you want to enjoy your college years, getting out of your comfort zone and just trying different stuff is the best way to go. Try new things, speak to someone new, or even go to a new place for lunch.
I would’ve never imagined myself speaking in front of 310 students without having a nervous breakdown.  I am so used to always being the girl you’ll see hiding her face at the back of the room.

Use this time to push yourself out of your comfort zone and have some fun.

Assignments
Don't be like me that leaves an assignment to the very last minutes or forget about it completely! I would say around two to three days of getting your assignment, do start doing your research! That gives you plenty of time to ask your lecturer any questions or go to the library to get some books before they are all taken!

If you are finding your assignment to be difficult, please don't just decide not to do it! E-mail your lecturer, ask for help from your peers or anything! These assignments will benefit you so much during exam times.

Balance College works with fun time
It is very important to remember to balance your college life with social life. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not saying spend your whole college life in your room studying, you deserve a break! If you have given enough time to college work, finished all your assignments and went over work you did not understand, then you’re free to do whatever you want.

So ladies if a guy is asking you to Netflix and chill when you know you've got assignment due the next day that is nowhere near done, kindly reject that offer!

Take time off if needed
I know I did say attend all your lectures, but if you really need to take time off then do. Now I'm not saying be gone for two months! But if you just need to breathe and get your head straight, then take a day off but make sure you catch up on the work you've missed out on!
If you are planning on taking a day off, then try to make it on a day you haven't got many lectures on!

Don't buy your books just yet!
I went through my first year of college without spending a cent on any book. The books you need are usually in the library for you to borrow, but make sure you return or renew them on time to avoid a fine! As well as that, your lecturers would usually put your notes on web courses so you're sorted. I mean the books you're buying do cost a lot so do wait a while before you go purchasing a book.

 Talk to someone
Please please don't go through college feeling crap and not talk to someone. If you feel the pressure of college or anything might be getting to you, then do talk to someone! Talk to a friend, a family member or a counsellor!
I'm pretty sure the health services in Dit is based on the second floor in Aungier Street. But for you all that are not based on this campus, make it your duty to found out where the health services in your college are based!

SAVE
I cannot stress the importance of saving! If I could go back, I would tell myself to stop spending my money on food and save it!
You don’t want to go through your first year of college not being able to have fun simply because you’ve spent all your money on food.

Especially like me if you’re unemployed and depending on SUSI, Plan yourself! Do get a part time job.
You know you’ve got to print out notes, pay for bus fare and still want to be able to have some fun with friends, so don’t do what I did and spend all you money in a week buying God knows what.
If you can bring food from home, DO IT! It will save you a lot of money rather than spending almost a fiver every single day.

For you all that are based in DIT Kevin Street, I was informed that there's a microwave in your canteen (lucky you!)

I hope you enjoyed reading this post, do remember to have some fun, make friends and laugh a lot!
Until next time,
Lola.

Fave lipstick brand- WET N WILD

Hey dollies, I have returned with my second post yay! But before I begin, I would like to thank all of you that read the previous post!! To those of you who helped me with promoting this blog, you are all the real MVP!
Today’s blog post is focused around my favourite brand for purchasing lipsticks!
For you all that haven’t heard of WET N WILD, it is a drugstore beauty brand that offers customers with good quality products that are actually affordable!
So if you’re like me that can’t resist affordable and GREAT quality lipsticks, then keep on reading!
WET N WILD offers varieties of shades for you to choose from. I have only got four shades myself as I wouldn't wear lipstick that much as I mentioned in my previous post. But literally all the colours you need and want are there for you! The lipsticks are also really pigmented and it is matte.
You can purchase these lipsticks from your local drugstore for only €2.99!! Good quality lipsticks for only €2.99? I promise you this is not a dream. I usually apply lip balm to my lips before applying this lipsticks at it can be a bit drying.

The packaging is low quality but who cares? Not me anyway. I wasn't expecting a lot of work to be put into the packaging as the lipsticks are not expensive.

The four shades I currently use are Mocha-licious, Spiked with rum, Cherry bomb and my personal favourite Sugar plum fairy. I do plan on purchasing some more, so if you do have shades that you would recommend,  please let me know!

Mocha-licious
I actually only purchased this shade last Sunday as I was looking for a nude to wear for an everyday makeup. I have to say, it is amazing! It's the perfect nude I am looking for. This is perfect to wear to college every day, or if you are going for a  smokey eyes and a simple nude with a bit of gloss over it. I promise you cannot go wrong.

Spiked with rum

This is another one of my recent purchase. It did not give me the kind of nude I was looking for but regardless I still love it. You can wear it for an everyday look or even if you’re going on your cute little date (lucky you).

The only thing I don’t like about this lipstick is that it transfers when you eat or drink which is totally annoying. But sure you can always reapply it when you’re finished.

Cherry bomb

I'm in love with this shade as it gives that dark red look I need. I love wearing this colour during the winter time, it goes perfectly with a brown eyeshadow and winged liner. It is a bit drying so I would recommend applying a lip balm before this. It does last up to 3-4 hours but I would still reapply it after grabbing something to eat.
This is a shade I would definitely repurchase.

Sugar plum fairy
My all time favourite lipstick! I literally adore this lipstick. If you don’t own this lipstick, I suggest you buy it now! This was the first lipstick I bought from WET N WILD

Sugar plum fairy is a dupe for M.A.C Rebel. It is fantastic for that autumn look with a simple wing liner. I usually would wear this lipstick for night outs.

It also gives that matte look which I freaking love! If you’re not looking for a matte look, you can easily apply a clear gloss on top of this and you’re good to go!

And that brings us to the end of this post. If you’ve tried this brand before please do let me know your opinion and if you've got any shades you would recommend, do share!

I hope you've enjoyed reading this post as much as I've enjoyed writing it.
If you haven't already, make sure you subscribe to the blog and do leave a comment!

Until next time,
Lola.

MUST HAVE MAKEUP PRODUCTS

From foundation to eyebrow kit, to mascara and lipsticks here are my MUST HAVE makeup products.
                   LETS BEGIN!

     Eyebrow kit

If you’re like me that was not blessed with nice looking eyebrows *weeps* then yes eyebrow pencil should definitely be something that should have a permanent home in your cosmetics bag.

I swear eyebrow pencils could make your eyebrows from looking bleh to looking ON FLEEK! We all want our eyebrows on fleek don’t we?

The eyebrow kit I use is from boots called Work the colour eyebrow kit. I apply it with an angle brush from M.A.C

Concealer

Concealers are amazing for hiding those eye bags that just won’t disappear! I also find it to be really good for priming the eyelids before applying eyeshadow.

So next time rather than spending an extra quid on eye primer, USE YOUR                                            CONCEALER

I use pro.conceal in Fawn for underneath my eyes and M.A.C studio finish concealer for underneath my brows and for priming my eyelids.

 Mascara
You ladies know of course mascara is a must! I have had days myself where my alarm doesn’t go off and the only thing I’ve got time to apply is my mascara.
I’m sure there’s a few ladies out there like me that would not spend much on mascara, I mean c’mon we all can’t afford to spend £26 on bleeding mascara!

The mascara I use is from Primark I believe it is called Lashed. Trust me it does the job.

(Mine is in an awful state so I had to grab this picture from the internet.)

 Foundation
I’m sure there’s a few ladies out there that would argue and say foundation is not a must have but I                                                             love love looove applying foundation. .

I use Studio fix fluid in NW45 from M.A.C which I often mix with bare skin foundation from Sleek.

I literally get so excited applying my foundation. For me it is a MUST HAVE in my cosmetic bag.

 Setting spray
If you’re like me that is cursed with an oily face then I am sure you know the struggle of doing your makeup and then four hours later, your face looks like you could fry an egg on it. *sigh* the struggle is real.

I use the setting spray from Urban Decay – Oil-control. It is the best purchase I have ever made in my entire 18 years of existence. I adore this setting spray. I use the small bottle for €12. This bottle actually lasts me a long time!

 Brushes
I personally believe brushes are something that should always be in a ladies cosmetic bag. I know there’s a few ladies out there that would prefer to apply makeup with their hands which is perfectly fine. Using brushes for applying makeup just gives you that perfect finish you need. Ya know what I’m saying? Cool.

I use Real Technique brushes and this cute little brush from Makeover Essentials for applying my makeup.
Moving on to the next must have products.
Powder/Primer
Using a primer before applying your foundation is EVERYTHING! I use Stay matte primer from Rimmel London and it is Gold! Which reminds me, I need to restock on it.
It is really important to always set your makeup. Like ALWAYS!

I use FIT me pressed powder from Maybelline to set underneath my eyes and M.A.C studio fix powder to set the rest of my face.

  Liquid Eyeliner
I can’t be the only one who feels like my makeup is incomplete if I don’t apply my eyeliner. This is certainly a must have for me!

I use the eyeliner I purchased on a Chinese website with an angled brush. It does an amazing job for a product I got for £1.89.

 Lipstick/lip balm

If I am quite honest, I barely wear lipstick this days. Instead of wearing lipstick, I usually wear a lip balm and I am good to go.

And that brings us to the end of this post. Cheers if you made it this far. If there are any products I have not mentioned, do feel free to share.
Until next time,
Lola.
